Morning in Santhal Village
The Santhals, largest tribal community in India, are an agricultural tribe. They clear forests, toil on the land, and produce food for survival. Featured here is a Santhal village near Shantiniketan, West Bengal. Beside agriculture they also domesticate animals like cows, buffaloes and pigs. The renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore, who worked for the reformation of these Santhals, brought them here and settled them in nearby villages.
