Tram Service in Kolkata West Bengal

Tram services are the cheapest mode of traveling in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal state in India. It is undertaken by Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC). Kolkata is the only city in India, which has tram service now. Earlier, cities like Chennai and Mumbai had tram services, but they were stopped years ago

The first tram service which started in Kolkata was in 1873 as a horse drawn tram carriage. Due to the lack of patronization, it was put on hold and in 1880; the tram service was resumed again. It was the Englishmen who started the Calcutta Tramways Company and restarted the tram service.

Today, some people in Kolkata favor the tram service while some others are against it. It is because of the traffic problem created by the trams. Trams are usually slow moving vehicles and therefore heavy traffic problem occurs within the city.

At the same time it attracts the tourists from various parts of the country. Although, trams are older, they have their own historical value.
