Shaheed Minar in Kolkata, West Bengal
Shaheed Minar literally meaning ‘The Tower of the Martyr’s’ is situated in the north east of Maidan adjoining Esplanade in Kolkata, West Bengal state of India.
This monument was erected by Sir David Ochterlony in 1848 to immortalize his victory in the Nepal War that took place between 1814 and 1816. Shaheed Minar is located in the heart of the city and is a most visited tourist spot within Kolkata.
It is open to visitors from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm everyday and the entry is free. The memorial is situated near the Howrah railway station.
