Nandan Theatre in Kolkata
The Nandan Theatre in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal is situated to the southeast tip of the Maidan (Ground). The importance of this theatre is related with the cine culture of Bengal.The veteran director late Satyajit Ray, who had contributed a lot to the Bengali film industry as well as Indian cinema, inaugurated Nandan Theatre.
It was opened to the public in September 1985. Satyajit Ray created a landmark in the history of Indian cinema and it was continued by Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen and now Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghosh.
Usually Film Festivals and Retrospectives are held in the Nandan Theatre. You can access a rare collection of books relating to World Cinema inside the theatre complex. The film complex has the Satyajit Ray Film Archive and Ritwik Memorial Library.
During the Kolkata Film Festival, this theatre showcases some of the world classic films, which are appreciated by the critics. On the whole this theatre represents the film culture of Bengal.
