Kolkata City - A Short Trip
Kolkata – the capital of West Bengal state in India is located on the banks of the River Hooghly. Biggest among cities in Eastern India, Kolkata was formerly known as Calcutta. The city was the capital of India till 1912, during the British rule.
Referred to as India’s friendliest metropolis, Kolkata is noted for its rich Bengali traditions. It is in this city, the inimitable Bengali poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861.
The name Kolkata originates from Kalikata, the name of one of the three villages in the area before. The anglicized version – Calcutta came into use during the time of the British rule in India.
