Indian Museum, Kolkata
The Kolkata (Calcutta) Indian Museum is situated in West Bengal state in India. It is considered to be the earliest and the best museum in the country. The museum was established in 1814 by a botanist from Denmark, Nathaniel Wallich.
The museum was shifted to the present building in 1875 and was opened to the public in 1878. It houses around 60 galleries consisting of six main sectors- Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Industry, Geology and Zoology. The museum has three floors and covers an area of 930 sq.mts.
The museum is open on all days except Mondays and holidays. The entry fee is Rs10 for the Indians and Rs150 for foreigners. From March to November the timings for the museum are 10 am to 5 pm and it changes to 10 am to 4 pm between December and February.
