Gangotri Temple, a night view
On the right bank of River Ganga and encircled by rocky peaks is the temple of Gangotri or the temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Visited by pilgrims from all over India, the Gangotri temple made of white marble stands out from the surrounding darkened rocky mountain slopes, only to become part of the white satin during the winter months, when the whole area is covered in snow.
The temple would remain close during the winter months starting from November middle to the end of April. During this time, the idol of the Goddess is kept at Mukhba village, near Harsil. Situated at Uttarkashi district, Gangotri temple is in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
