Tripura Sundari temple
The Tripura Sundari temple also known as Matabari is situated in Udaipur, the district headquarters of South Tripura at Tripura state in India. It says that, the state ‘Tripura’ gets its name from this temple. The temple is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas (pithasthanas) for Hindu pilgrims in India. Dedicated to the Mother Goddess, the temple sanctum is made in the model of a typical Bengali hut.
As per mythology, Lord Vishnu cut off the body of Mata Sati into 51 pieces by Sudarshana Chakra and all these pieces fell at different places throughout the country and these places are known as pithasthanas. It is said that right foot of Mata Sati fell at Matabari.
According to an inscription note on the monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India, there are two identical images of the same deity. They are one, Tripura Sundari, inside the temple and the other called 'Chhotima' which seems to be a regional one rising about 2 feets in height, while the other is of 5 feet.
