Tilak’s Remembrance Day

The first of August – Tilak’s Remembrance Day – commemorates the death of the great Indian freedom fighter, Shri Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

Tilak was born on 23rd July, 1856, in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. His father was a Sanskrit scholar and a famous school teacher. Tilak’s father influenced him greatly but left home when Tilak was only sixteen. Tilak graduated from the Deccan College of Pune, in 1877, and was among the first Indians who obtained college education.

After joining the Indian National Congress, he worked actively for the upliftment of his fellow countrymen. He was a great social reformer and worked tirelessly for banning child marriages and encouraged widow remarriages. He was great editor, journalist, mathematician, Sanskrit scholar and a natural leader of India.

To the British, he was ‘The Father of the Indian Unrest’. His slogan, “Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it” inspired millions of India to whom he was the ‘Lion of India’. He died on 1st August 1920.
