Sushumna is the principal channel of energy in the body, according to yoga. The unique yogic experience of spiritual consciousness occurs when the
prana (life force) flows up through the sushumna nadi. Therefore this nadi is also described as the Brahma nadi or the passage to Brahman. While the Ida and Pingala run outside the spinal column, the Sushumna runs within the column. It extends from the base of the spine to the brain. Sushumna is also described as trigunamayi because it is composed of all the three gunas (qualities) – Satva,
Rajas and Tamas. Being the main nadi it represents the sun, moon and fire.
