Surdas Jayanti celebrates the birthday of blind saint-poet, Surdas, who was one sage of the people who were instrumental in the spread of the Bhakti movement in North India. It falls on Shukla panchami, the fifth day of waxing moon in the month of Vaishakh (May-June).
Surdas, who lived a life of simplicity and modesty, is best known for his beautiful bhajans about Krishna’s childhood that captured the hearts of both the commoners and the rich. King Akbar was the most famous patron of Surdas.
His legacy includes his magnum opus, the Sur Sagar, the Sur-Saravali and the Sahitya-Lahiri. Surdas’s birthday is celebrated with great enthusiasm, especially in Braj and Vrindavan where he is supposed to have been led by Krishna who appeared to him in a dream.
