Sonamarg is a tranquil hill station, located in the north-west part of
India in the state of
Jammu and Kashmir. It is amidst the Himalayan ranges at an altitude of 2740 m above sea level. Sonamarg is 80 km north-east of
Srinagar, the capital city of
Jammu and Kashmir. Since it serves as a take off station for Ladakh, it is called as the “Gateway to Ladakh”.
Encircled by snow-covered mountains, Sonamarg is a wonderful summer destination for tourists. This hill station has a lot of lakes, water falls, passes and scenic spots.
Scenic Spots:
Sonamarg is a place of enchanting beauty. When the snow-capped peaks are caressed by sunlight they turn into a golden color. Travelers will be enthralled by the lush green meadows, flower carpeted fields and dense pine forests. The drive from
Srinagar to Sonamarg itself offers a magnificent view to the tourists.
Gadsar Lake:
This is one of the high altitude lakes of Kashmir. It is perched at an altitude of about 5000 m in the lap of the Himalayas. It is famous for its brown colored game and food fishes mainly trout. Tourists can indulge in angling here.
Satsar Lake:
This lake is located on the periphery of Sonamarg at an altitude of 3600 m above sea level. Tourists can reach this lake by an adventurous trek from Sonamarg. The lake is surrounded by trees and alpine flowers.
Vishansar Lake:
It is at an altitude of 4084 m above sea level. Tourists will be enchanted by the translucent water surface with floating ice flakes. Travelers can have a charming view of the lake from Nichnai Pass.
Krishnasar Lake:
This picturesque lake is located near Sonamarg at an altitude of 3801 m above sea level. It is easily accessed by Nichnai Pass. Tourists can enjoy their holiday in a peaceful environment here. It is also famous for trout fishing.
Nichnai Pass:
It is located at an altitude of about 4139 m. This pass ascends from Shokhadri and Glacier peaks. It serves as the base station for lots of treks. Tourists can enjoy the panoramic view of three lakes Vishnasar, Krishnasar and Gangabal from this vantage point.
Zoji-La Pass:
It is perched at an altitude of 3540 m at about 20 km east of this hill station. This is the “Gateway to Ladakh”.
Baltal:
It is 15 km from Sonamarg. Being located at the base of Zoji-la Pass, it has the sacred cave of Amarnath dedicated to Lord Shiva. Tourists can stay in the tents on the vast camping ground near this place.
Adventure seekers can have a good time by trekking and trout fishing in this hill station.
The airport nearest to Sonamarg is in Badgam district. The nearest railhead is Jammu. It is well linked with
Srinagar by NH 1A.
