Raksha Bandhan
Date : August 13, 2011
Venue : All over Central and North India
Raksha Bandhan, literally the bond of protection, is a festival that celebrates the special bond between a brother and a sister. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan.
During Raksha Bandhan, a sacred thread of protection and love – the rakhi - is prayerfully tied by a woman on the wrist of a man who is her brother or a brother-figure. Before it is tied, the sacred thread, delicate and sometimes decorated, is placed in a plate known as the rakhi thali along with sweets.
The rakhi is an unspoken pledge that cements and strengthens the relationship between a brother and sister and reinforces their bond that acts to protect them against all ills.
In the olden days, priests used to tie sacred rakhis on the wrists of the members of his congregation. During the middle ages, if a woman tied a rakhi for a man, it was considered his sacred duty to honour and protect that woman at all times.
