Rakhadumni
Date : August 13, 2011
Venue : Himachal Pradesh
The Rakhadumni festival is celebrated on the full moon day in the monsoon month of Bhadrapad.
During the festival, married women return to their parents’ houses to tie rakhi – the sacred thread – on the wrists of their brothers. They are received warmly and given gifts of money and clothes. The rakhi threads are kept on for a month, till the end of the Sairi festival, at which time they are offered to Mother Sairi.
Women who do not have brothers may tie the thread on the wrist of any man in the village and thus become sister to him. Family priests visit the houses of their patrons (yajman) to tie rakhis on their wrists and bless them.
