Rajkot

Rajkot is a part of Kathiawar Peninsula in Gujarat state of western India. Situated in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Rajkot is 231 km away from Ahmedabad. The river Aji gushes through this town.

History:
In 1612, Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja of Jadeja clan established Rajkot. It was then the capital of Saurashtra. It is the origin place of Gandhiji’s non-violence movement. Now this bustling city is one of India’s important commercial hubs. It is well known for its jewellery, woollen, silk, embroidery and bandhni textile products.

Kaba Gandhi’s Gate:
Tourists must visit the ancestral home of Gandhiji in Rajkot. This house has now been converted into a museum named “Gandhi Smriti”. It has a good collection of photographs and personal effects of Mahatma Gandhi.

Watson Museum:
This museum, which was named in honor of Colonel John Watson, is located in jubilee gardens of Rajkot. This is an important Saurashtra cultural heritage site. Mohenjodaro artefacts, Silverware, 13th century carvings etc are few of the important exhibits here. The marble statue of Queen Victoria is quite enchanting. Besides these, there are enormous portraits and paintings of royal princes of Saurashtra.

Jagat Mandir:
This temple is dedicated to Ramakrishna Paramhansa. The temple is beautifully carved out of red stone. It is worth visiting the temple.

Lal Pari Lake:
This scenic picnic spot is located five km away from Rajkot. Visitors can hire boats and set out for a ride.

Wankaner Palace:
This palace is located in Wankaner town which is an hour drive away from Rajkot. This palace was built by king Amarsinhji, who also built the Ranjit vilas palace atop a hill facing Wankaner town. This palace is the perfect blend of various architectural styles like Gothic, Dutch, and Mughal. Tourists must visit the Wankaner palace. This is 53 km away from Rajkot city.

Aji dam:
It is situated eight km away from Rajkot. This is the main reservoir for the city. The step garden near the dam is an ideal place for picnicking. Also kids can have a good time in the amusement park and crocodile farm near the dam.

Jalaram Temple:
This temple is located in Virpur, which is 64 km from Rajkot. It is an important pilgrimage place for the people of Lohana community.

Gondal:
This is located 38 km away from Rajkot. Visitors can set out for various princely palaces and monuments in this small leafy town. Orchard palace, set amidst a fruit orchard is the best of its kind in India

Rajkot has its own airport, railhead and well laid roadways which connect it with major parts of India.
