Phalodi
Phalodi is situated in the district of Jodhpur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Lying in the Thar Desert between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, this little town, founded in the 15th century, was ruled by Rao Maldev Rathore of Jodhpur. Phalodi possess all the colorful and exotic charms that characterize Rajasthan. Phalodi is an old caravan centre, now trading in camel’s sheep, hide and salt. Now it is well known for the Jain and Hindu temples some of which are more than 300 years old and a number of strikingly impressive havelis with Jharokhas and jaalis in vibrant colors. Built in 1750, Lal Niwas, a haveli made of red sandstone with intricately carved interiors and spacious courtyards, is now a heritage hotel.
The Phalodi Fort, built by Rao Hammir Narawat in 1488 A.D is also worth a visit as are the Jambaji temple and the temple of Ramdevra. Phalodi is a bird watcher’s haven as lot of migratory birds comes to Phalodi. Just 5 km from Phalodi is Khican, a sanctuary for the migratory Demoiselle cranes from South Western Europe, Ukraine and Poland.
A short trip of 62 km takes one to Osiyan, a famous Jain pilgrimage centre. The 2500 year old Osiyan Jain temple is a marvel in creamy sandstone with exquisite art work and a dome decorated with graceful figures of apsaras.
Phalodi is famous for its delicate jooti or shoes decorated with heavy embroidery and bangles. As a travel destination in Rajasthan, India, Phalodi has a lot to offer.
