The Novidade festival of Goa, celebrated by both Christians and Hindus alike, marks the beginning of the harvest season. On this day, farmers offer a portion of the first rice crop to the church of Goa.
During the festival, a large procession is taken out from the field to the church with the priest carrying some sheaves of rice, accompanied by singing and dancing devotees. Playing the role of a harvester, the priest then makes the rice offering to God.
Apart from this ritualistic offering, there are the offerings that the devotees make from the first crop to the priests, on the 21st of August, and to the Governor and the Archbishop on the 24th, which is placed inside the Cathedral.
Other highlights of the festival include a re-enactment of a battle between Albuquerque and the Adil Shah on the Lieutenant Governor’s palace lawns, a folk dance called Bhandup performed by tribal women, and some special dishes.
The Novidade is celebrated during the months of August-September which, according to Hinduism, is the time of the Bhadra pada.
