Narali Poornima
Date : August 13, 2011
Venue : Maharashtra
Narali Poornima marks the end of the monsoon and the beginning of the fishing season in Maharashtra. It is celebrated on the full moon day, in the month of Shravan.
Naral means coconut and Narali Poornima refers to offerings of coconut to the Sea God. The fishermen offer coconuts to the Varuna, the Sea God, to appease him and to ask for his protection as well as blessings for good catches. Only after this ritual do they venture out in their decorated boats at the beginning of the season.
Singing and dancing are the main attractions. Sweet coconut rice is prepared for the day and sweets are also distributed to near and dear ones. In some parts of the country, young boys remove their old yagnopavit or scared threads and replace them with new ones.
Narali Pournima, Shravani Pournima and Rakhi Pournima or Raksha Bandhan are all celebrated on the same day.
