Yoga texts tell us that there are 72000 nadis (energy channels) through which energy flows in our body. Among these, the most important are
Sushumna,
Ida and
Pingala nadis. In our ordinary activities
prana (the life force) flows either through the
Ida or
Pingala. The yogic practice of
pranayama (breathing) helps balance the rhythm of energy flow through both these nadis. This awakens the spiritual energy situated at the base of the spinal cord and makes it flow up through the Sushumna nadi. With it the sadhaka’s individual awareness is elevated to a state of transcendental spiritual consciousness.
