In Muslim population,
India is second only to Indonesia. Both the Sunni and the Shia the major sects of Muslim or Islam are there in
India, but Shiites are a minority. The majority of Indian Sunnis are followers of the Hanifi division. The moplahs of
Kerala and
Lakshadweep follow the Safi system. The Sunnis of
Gujarat follow the Malki system.
The Hanbali branch has no followers in
India. In the Shiites, there are subdivisions of chishti, suhravardi, shatari, quadiri, nakhsabandi etc. Muslim population is substantial in the states of
Kerala,
West Bengal,
Jammu-Kashmir and
Uttar Pradesh. In
Kashmir and
Lakshadweep Muslims form the majority community.
