Mahanadi, a river on the eastern side of
India. The Raipur hills, in the state of
Chhattisgarh is the source of this river. As it reaches the state of
Orissa, it creates a wide estuary, about 11 kilometers west of the capital city Cuttak. The famous Dam of Hirakud is across this river, and near the city of Sambalpur. Raipur, Raigarh, and Bustar of
Chhattisgarh, Belanghir, Kalahasti, Puri, and Cuttak are the districts nourished by Mahanadi. It falls into the Bay of Bengal, after a journey of 860 kilometers.
