And Gandhi himself was arrested and sent to prison without any trial or charge sheet. Sardar Patel, Sarojini Naidu, and several other close associates of Gandhi and leaders of the Congress were detained. Nehru was awarded rigorous imprisonment. The popular agitation against the brutalities of the government and its police assumed greater proportions. 

Boycott of the foreign goods, civil disobedience, strikes… In this unquiet atmosphere, anti-socials raised their hoods. A general sense of revolt was slowly gaining currency. But people took part in the agitation more vigorously and in great enthusiasm to intensify the great Indian freedom struggle. More than 80,000 people were arrested.  Protest marchers were cruelly beaten up. India was boiling up.
