The most popular hill station of
Maharashtra state, Khandala, is located 5 km away from Lonavala and 101 km southeast of Mumbai. Khandala is located at an altitude of 625 m offering panoramic vistas of the Western Ghats of
India. It is located 69 km away from Pune amidst the lush green valleys and hills of the Sahyadri ranges.
The hillock is the perfect getaway from tiring toil. It is sandwiched between Deccan plateau and Konkani plain atop the Bhor Ghat. According to Indian history, this place was ruled by the mighty Maratha King, Shivaji. Later the British conquered the place.
Duke’s Nose:
This viewpoint got its name after the Duke of Wellington. Here tourists can have views of breathtaking valleys.
Gardens:
In Khandala, tourists are greeted by some landscaped gardens like Ryewood park and Shivaji park. Ryewood park also houses a temple of
Lord Shiva within it. These places are frequented by families and couples. It is an ideal picnic spot. Rajmachi park offers picturesque vistas of the hill and the tourists can also have a glimpse of Rajmachi fort from its eastern end.
Bushy Dam:
This is the most popular tourist spot near Khandala. During monsoon, the dam will have heavy inflow of water, so that a waterfall is formed from the edge of the dam. It is worth visiting the dam to see this sight.
Lonavala:
This is one more popular hill station located just 5 km away from Khandala. This hillock is similar to Khandala in vegetation, environment etc. Tourists can indulge in angling.
Caves:
Being located 11 km from Khandala, Karla and Bhaja caves are the must visit places here. Dating back to 2nd century B.C, these caves possess an ancient rock cut Buddhist temple which belongs to the Hinayana sect. Two rows of rock cut pillars in Karla cave are also enticing.
Lakes:
There are several lakes in Khandala’s vicinity. Tungarli Lake has water ruffling its shores except in summer. Visitors must also pay a visit to Pawna lake, Lonavala lake and Valvan lake.
The nearest airport to Khandala is at Mumbai which is 101 km away. Pune is the nearest railhead which is 69 km away. Khandala is also accessible by well laid motor expressways.
