Dandeli, situated on the banks of the river Kali, with the Western Ghats forming the backdrop, is a city in the Uttara Kannada district of
Karnataka in India, and is an interesting travel spot.
It is one of the many Indian cities that can boast of a multi-cultural community, partaking of the influences of both
Karnataka and
Maharashtra. With the Western Ghats and the River Kali making their presence felt, it’s no wonder that Dandeli is a haven for nature lovers and adventure sports enthusiasts’ .
The most important place here is the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary which spreads over 128 sq. kms with thick deciduous forests and a profusion of teak and bamboo. The wildlife sanctuary houses nearly 200 species of birds and wild life like elephants, bison, sambars, tigers, cheetahs etc, including some rare species like black panther, flying squirrel, flying snake and slender Loris. Sykes Point, the highest point in Uttara Kannada district, affords spectacular views of the Kali river valley.
25 kms away from Dandeli town lies the Kavala Caves, believed to be Lord Shiva’s abode. The route to the naturally formed shivalinga is an adventurous one with a thousand steps and a number of narrow and winding tunnels to traverse. Water sports, white water rafting, coracle rides, kayaking, and canoeing are some of the activities possible in the Kali River.
