One of the principal texts of
Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine and health, is the Ashtanga Hrudaya (the essence of the eight sections). It was composed by
Vagbhata. Born in a Brahmin family in Sind near Karachi, he was taught Ayurvedic medicine by his father Sinhagupta and a Buddhist monk named Avalokita. Ashtanga Hrudaya is the third book in the Brihat Trayi (the great trilogy).
