The building where the museum functions was once the famous Tamukkam Palace of Rani Mangammal of Naick dynasty built about 1670 A.D.
After the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the Tamukkam palace with about 13 acres of land was gifted by the Tamilnadu State Government to the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi for erecting a memorial.
