Thiruchendur Temple: Lord Muruga's abode on the beach
Set on the banks of a beautiful seashore in Thiruchendur in Tuticorin district, Thiruchendur Temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga and is considered one of the six major abodes of the lord. He is believed to have come here on the instructions of Lord Shiva to take on the asuras and protect the devas; something he successfully achieved. The glory of this deity is described in various ancient Tamil literature.
There are two major temple festivals; the Vaikasi Visagam (May-June) and the Avani (Aug-Sept), celebrated in typical Tamil style with colour, music and dancing. The area is easily accessible by bus or car, and there are frequent train services to Tiruchendur from the nearest Tirunelveli Junction.
