The Rhythms of Rajasthan
The State of Rajasthan is world renowned for its folk music using unique musical instruments. Both percussion instruments and stringed instruments are utilized during Rajasthani folk music performances. The Kamachya is one such unusual instrument. It has a hollow circular base with a finger board attached to it. Nine supplementary and four sympathetic strings pass horizontally on the body of the instrument and these are attached by adjustable pegs at one end and fixed at the other end. Thus the instrument is quite similar to a violin except for its larger size and the additional number of strings. A long wooden bow made with horse tail hair is used to strike the strings to produce sound.
