Krishna lifting up the Govardhana Mountain
This Pahari miniature painting in the Kangra style from India illustrates a story from the great Indian scripture the Bhagavata Purana in which Krishna saves Vraja from the torrential rain sent by a wrathful rain god Indra, who was angered by Krishna’s asking the villagers to stop worshipping Indra. The incessant rain let loose by Indra threatened to destroy the village and everything in it, when listening to the pleas of the villagers to save their lives, Krishna lifted up the Govardhana Mountain and held it above them like an umbrella. The painter of this miniature work of art is Majnu.
