Puri Jagannath Temple, Odisha
Jagannath Temple, one of the most famous temples in India, situated in the State of Odisha (Orissa). The temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath (Lord Krishna) was established in the 12th century CE. Located around 60 km from Bhubaneswar, the foundation stone of this temple was laid by Raja Ananta Varman Chodaganga Dev.
The legend associated with this temple describes that King Indradyumna in his dream saw Lord Jagannath and as per the lord’s wish constructed the Jagannath temple.
Due to its architectural splendour, devotees and tourists from around the world frequent this shrine for prayers and to experience its sculptural grandeur. One can find various pictures depicting the life of Lord Krishna on the temple walls along with several magnificent monuments of Orissa.
The English word ‘Juggernaut’ meaning giant slow moving machinery came from the huge temple chariots of the Jagannath temple, which are drawn through the streets during the annual chariot or Rath Yatra festival.
