Captain Lakshmi Passes away, A rare recording of Jana Gana Mana in her own voice

Captain Lakshmi was a revolutionist of the Indian independence movement and an officer of the Indian National Army. Born Lakshmi Swaminathan in Chennai, Madras Presidency, British India, she had intense desire to help the poor that pressed her to take medical profession. She received an MBBS degree from Madras Medical College in 1938.

In 1940, she left for Singapore, where she established a clinic for the poor. In 1943 he joined the Rani of Jhansi regiment raised by Subhas Chandra Bose. Sahgal joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1971 and represented the party in the Rajya Sabha. She was nominated Sahgal as a candidate in the presidential elections in 2002. Captain Lakshmi passed away on 23rd July 2012 at 11:50 A.M. at the age of 97.

The song in the background is Subh Sukh Chainhe national anthem of the Provisional Government of Free India sung by Captain Lakshmi herself. The song was based on Rabindranath Tagore’s Bengali poem Jana Gana Mana, which became the national anthem of India.
