Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai
Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai (Bombay) is one of the most famous and oldest temples in the city. It was erected in the year 1785. It is located at Breach Candy on B. Desai road. The temple holds three deities Lakshmi, Kali and Saraswathi.
The temple is particularly dedicated to Mahalaxmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth. The doorway of the temple is ornamented. Beside it you can see small shops selling flowers and various offerings to the goddess.
Every image in the temple has nose rings and pearl necklaces which are wrought very beautifully. The formation of this temple is connected with the construction of Hornby Vellard causeway.
The engineers who were engaged in the construction of Breach Candy road which connects Mahalakshmi area with Worli were defeated by the high tides. They almost dropped the plan. One day Mahalaxmi appeared in the dream of the chief engineer and asked him to install her idol at the place. That is how the temple was erected in 1785 and the Breach Candy road was completed.
Navarathri is the famous festival which is celebrated in this temple. During this nine night celebration the temple is decorated with illuminations and is very beautiful to see.
