Vamana temple at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh
Belonging to the Eastern group of temples in Khjauraho, Madhya Pradesh, Vamana temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Vamana (dwarf) form. It is a nirandhara temple, ie, one without an ambulatory.
The temple’s outer walls have two bands of sculptures and include those of the graceful Sura Sundaris (heavenly beauties). The sculptural style here indicates that the temple had been built between 1050 and 1075 AD.
Khajuraho village has a group of 25 ancient temples, which were built by the Chandella rulers between AD 900 and 1130. These temples have been included in the UNESCO world Heritage List for their ‘outstanding universal value’ and ‘human creative genius’.
