Observatory in Ujjain
Built in 1730 by Maharaja Jai Singh, the observatory at Ujjain in the State of Madhya Pradesh has been India’s Greenwich, since the 4th century BCE. Among the observatories he built, the one at Ujjain is the only one still in use.
You can come across two marble-topped sundials in this beautifully set small garden, in which one of them is a conventional sundial while the other is made up of two large quadrants, separated by a tall staircase the shadow of which indicates the time.
