Khajuraho sculptures
Representing the classical legacy of the sculptural art, Khajuraho is a real visual treat to a visitor. It will not be exaggerative to say that each and every inch of the existing 25 temples of Khajuraho is filled with sculptures of different moods and themes.
The Khajuraho sculptures are divided into five broad categories– the formal/cult images, the family, attendant and enclosing divinities, celestial beauties or sura sundaris, domestic and erotic scenes and sculptures of animals.
The Khajuraho group of temples, built during the reign of the Chandella rulers between 900 and 1130 AD, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List for their ‘outstanding universal value’ and ‘human creative genius’.
