The Sun’ s salute to Jagadambi temple, Khajuraho
As the first rays of sun fall on the architectural marvel of Jagadambi temple of Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, it is a real treat for one’s eyes.
The temple is originally dedicated to Lord Vishnu. But now it enshrines the image of Goddess Parvati, painted in black and hence the name Jagadambi (Kali).
The temple has many exquisite sculptures which include the finest figures of gods, including that of Yama, the god of death. Also to be noted are sculptures of Surasundaris (heavenly beauties) and erotic couples.
The erotic sculptures here are distinguished by a rare sensitivity and an expression of intense absorption and rapture, which transcend from the physical to the spiritual plane.
