Rock-Cut Temples - part II
The intricately carved rock-cut temples of 21 Jain Tirthankaras in Gwalior is one of the major attractions of Madhya Pradesh State, India. Giant sculptures of the Tirthankaras are seen set deep into the steep rock faces. Tirthankaras are Jain teachers who revitalized Jain Society by organisation of the four fold Jain Order consisting of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen.
Most of the Jain sculptures were vandalized and mutilated by Muslim armies in the 16th century and were rebuilt later. It is one of the most visited places in Gwalior.
