Lakshmi Temple, Khajuraho
Khajuraho is a small town in Madhya Pradesh and is famed for its temples with wonderful sculptures. It is assumed that there were 85 temples in the regions of which 25 existing even now.
These temples were built during the reign of the Chandella rulers between AD 900 and AD 1130.The first recorded mention of these temples was found in the accounts of Abu Rihan al Biruni and the Arab traveller Ibn Battuta.
Lakshmi temple of Khajuraho belongs to the Western Group of temples. Dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth, this temple is smaller in comparison with the other temples. The sculptures are done in a moderate manner and the images of two guards supporting the pillar posts in front of the sanctum sanctorum are remarkable.
The temples of Kahjuraho have been included in the World Heritage List for their outstanding universal value and human creative genius.
