Inside Jagadambi Temple, Khajuraho
Khajuraho, a small town in Madhya Pradesh has its name reached far and wide for its temples with exquisite sculptures. Originally, it is thought, that there were 85 temples in the area of which only 25 surviving now.
Jagadambi temple belongs to the Western group of temples in Khajuaraho. The temple is named after the image of goddess Parvati now enshrined in the temple. However, it is assumed that the temple was originally dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
The temple stands on a lofty platform and has three pairs of dwarapalaka (guards) sculptures round the Maha Mandapa (big hall). The Maha Mandapa has a square ceiling also.
The sculptures of the temples include some of the finest figures of gods and goddesses. An imposing sculpture of Yama, the god of death, is captivating. The sculptures of Sura Sundaris (heavenly beauties) and erotic couples can also be seen.
The Khajuraho group of temples has been included in the World Heritage List for their outstanding universal value and human creative genius.
