Kamala Das' view on Sexuality

Kamala Das (Kamala Suraiyya, Madhavikutty) the renowned Indian English poet, is known for her brave take on female identity and sexuality. Dr. Meena T. Pillai, Associate Professor, Institute of English, University of Kerala, explains in a paper how Das’ poems problematise the very categories of masculine and feminine. Through the reading of poems like ‘Ghanshyam,’ ‘The Suicide’ and ‘The Old Playhouse’ the speaker illustrates how she becomes one of the early women writers to perceive gender as an act.
