The Paramekkavu Temple of Thrissur
The two temples of Thrissur (trichur) that lead the famous Thrissur pooram fiesta are the temples of Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi. It is their friendly competition, which is often referred to as the competition of Gods, which makes the highlights of the pooram like fireworks, illumination, and the parasol exchanging ritual on elephants known as kudamattam (kudamattom), so interesting.
The ceremonial procession from the Paramekkavu temple to the premises of the Vadakkumnathan temple, where the festivities are held, is a grand one. Fifteen elephants lead the procession, to the accompaniment of panchavadyam and pandimelam, which are orchestras in which percussion instruments predominate.
