Sri Mahalingeshwara temple in Adoor, Kasaragod
Kasaragod, one of the districts in the state of Kerala, India, is popular for its forts, rivers, hillocks, beaches and shrines. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Mahalingeshwara temple in Adoor, is a popular shrine believed to have been constructed by Arjuna, one of the mythical Pandava warrior prince, in the Indian epic Mahabharata. Built in the 13th century, this age old temple is located on the southern banks of Payaswini River.
Legend says that it was at Adoor, a scenic village in Kasaragod, where 'Kiratha Yudham' — the battle between Lord Shiva and Arjuna took place. Intricate carvings and colourful paintings can be seen on the walls of the temple along with the scenes from holy scripts.
The annual festival of the temple is celebrated in the month of February/ March.
