Shopping on the Jew Street
The Jew Street in Kochi is one of the best places for shopping. Here, you will find everything from aromatic oils and soaps to organic spices and antiques. There are shops selling curios, carved wooden furniture, bronze and brass sculptures, ornaments, and remnants of traditional houses.
Records show that the Jewish community had arrived at the Cochin port during A.D. 52. With the passage of time, most of the Jewish inhabitants have moved back to Israel. The antique sellers are the descendants of a fast dwindling population of Jews. They sell traditional utensils, old furniture, classic glassware and porcelain, vintage photographs, old clocks etc.
The Jewish Synagogue, at Mattanchery, is an architectural beauty. The age-old customs and prayers of the Jews are still observed here.
