Black Pepper Farm at Palakkad

Black Pepper (piper nigrum) is cultivated for its fruit which is then dried and ground for the powder which we know as black pepper powder. Popular White Pepper is a value added item of Black Pepper. When the skin is removed from the ripe Pepper it is known as White pepper.
Black Pepper has a historical value. Pepper along with other spices had been exported from Kerala to the west from ancient times. It is for getting monopoly of its trade that western explorers first landed in Kerala thereby leading to the colonization of India.
