Neyyar Dam
Neyyar dam, a picturesque lake site, is not that much away from the Thiruvananthapuram city. Even then, here one may have a feeling of being far away from the madding crowd. This picnic spot lies against the southern low hills of the Western Ghats.
The dam was built in 1958. Its sanctuary covers an area of about 128 square kilometres. It is a perfect spot for wild life enthusiasts, with many varieties of animals like gaur, sloth bear, jungle cat, nilgiri tahr, nilgiri langur, sambar deer, elephant, rat snake, Malabar squirrels and more.
There is a lion safari park in the vicinity of the dam. A crocodile farm and a deer park are the other attractions. A lake garden and swimming pool are also nearby to cool both one’s eyes and the body.
You can have a nice boating through the reservoir, enjoying the lush green scenery around. There is a watch tower from the top of which you can have a bird’s eye view of the surroundings, and the sight is even more breathtaking in the monsoon season.
