Mullaperiyar Dam in Idukki
Constructed over River Periyar, the longest river in the state of Kerala, India, Mullaperiyar is a gravity dam built in 1895 by the British Government. Located on the mesmerizing hill ranges of Idukki district of Kerala, the dam is built in lime and surki mortar (a mix of sugar and calcium oxide).
Based on a 999 year lease agreement between the British Government and the then Travancore Maharaja, the water in this reservoir is being used in five districts of Tamil Nadu for irrigation and drinking water purposes. The water is also used by Tamil Nadu for power generation.
The video shown here features the mighty Mullaperiyar Dam which derives its name from Mullayar and Periyar rivers.
