Boating in Thekkady Lake
Thekkady in Idukki district is a popular tourist destination offering splendid entertainment options like boating and trekking. Boating is offered in the Thekkady lake surrounded by the lush greenery of the Periyar wildlife sanctuary. The cruise is unique for its one among the few in the world that offers such close sight of wildlife.
Most interesting wildlife experience here would be the sight of elephant herds playing in the lake. The sanctuary is a protected Tiger Reserve and don’t wonder if you see a lone tiger gently walks in the woods. Gaur, Sambar deer and wild boar are some other mammals found in the forest.
The lake is an artificial one formed after the building of the Mullaperiyar dam across Periyar, the second longest river in the state. More than 30 species of fish are found in the lake. River Otter, the only mammal in the lake, can very often be seen along a ride. Boating is conducted by the state forest department and the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.
At about 4 km from Thekkady is Kumily, a small town ideal for shoppers looking for spices. Munnar, the famed hill station is about 106 km away from Thekkady and can be clubbed with a visit to Thekkady.
