The Payippad boat race - the Onam regatta

The Payipad (payippad) boat race is held during the days of the Onam celebrations in Alappuzha district. It is a three-day event, where the festivities of the first two days are restricted to snake boat pageantries. The race is on the day of the Thiruvonam asterism, which is the final and most important day of Onam celebrations.
The district of Alappuzha (alleppey) hosts other regattas also, such as the Nehru Trophy boat race and the Champakulam Moolam boat race.
