Boy with tourist at Vizhinjam beach
The small port and fishing village, Vizhinjam beach is one of the prominent tourist destinations near Thiruvananthapuram city. Vizhinjam is located very close to the popular Kovalam beach, at around a distance of 3 kms. It has many tourist resorts and Ayurvedic centres. Vizhinjam is a naturally created port and a government project to set up the Vizhinjam International Container Port is in full swing.
The oldest literature regarding the history of Vizhinjam, is an 8th century reference to it during the reign of the Ay dynasty. The Rock Cut Cave temple situated near the beach also dates back to the 8th century. This temple is an ancient shrine to Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi, and has sculptures of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.
