Kerala, the south-western state of India is gifted with a large number of water bodies like backwaters, ponds and streams. Moreover the western border of the state is the majestic Arabian Sea. The total coastline of the state is 590 kms.
Fishing is a major occupation in the state. A fishing hook, locally known as Choonda or Choondal is one among the traditional methods of fishing in the inland water bodies.
